Cop out Coptic

This post is a bit of a cop out, it has been saved in the back drawer for a rainy day. Today was the first rainy day after all that lovely sunshine, so work has been lower on the priority list. After all we have to make the most of the sun when we get it here.
This is my first attempt at Coptic binding, it has always been appealing cos you can use such a wide choice of covers with it - basically anything stiff that you can drill holes in. My instructions said the first one was unlikely to go well so I just used some scrap bits of paper, but as it turned out I rather like the colour combination and nothing went too wrong as far as I can tell.

Mini Map Book

I went to the Late Shows in Newcastle at the weekend - to be highly recommended for next year. Lots of venues open their doors from 7pm - 11pm for a free cultural experience on Friday and Saturday night. We wandered the streets with our late show glow sticks and had a great time. Some of the venues had public participation and the highlight for me was making a mini map book with Yvette Hawkins at the Globe Gallery, check out her website for her usual map folding creations - http://www.yvettehawkins.com/
But this is what we made with her............

The covers were Paperchase wrapping paper glued on stockboard with a bookcloth spine. All the pieces were already cut out for us to put together.

Inside was a cleverly folded map that opens out as the book opens. The lines were on the map to direct our folds.
The whole design couldn't have ticked any more boxes for me if it tried - maps, books and lovely paper. I was in heaven, paper heaven!
I am going to have to adapt it to use, I shall post my efforts in the future. Thanks Yvette.

Musical Notes

This book was commissioned for the lovely Hannah to keep notes and ideas in for a music project.

The colours for the book were inspired by these pink and orange patterned tissue papers. The flowing patterns were reminiscent of music and echoed some of the musical symbols.

Pages were printed with useful musical staves and decorative musical excerpts. I hope the book will help to make the project creative and visually exciting.

Lovely Books in Glasgow

Had a grand time at the 3rd Glasgow International Book Fair - lots of networking, chatting and gathering feedback. I thought Glasgow was a surprisingly lovely city, we saw it in good weather which  helped.
The fair is in a great location at the apex of the main shopping street Buchanan and the infamous Sauchiehall street. There were lots of lovely books to browse - such a variety. My favourite stall had big books made out of cardboard - but cardboard with interesting cutouts that fit around the boxes initial contents. I have collected just exactly that cardboard myself and was jealous that somebody had come up with such a good outcome for it.
The website is still very live and a showcase for all the participants - Have a look GIAB.

I have moved further North with lots and lots of bits of paper, to make hand bound books by the Sea.
I hope to recount some of my adventures and inspirations as I head off into the blue yonder.........
